The publishing house was established in 1937 in close association with an existing printing press that was founded in 1907. The publishing house was developed by Werner Gieseking as managing partner, who ran it until his death in 1992.

At first, the house primarily published materials and calendars from the German Youth Hostel Association in addition to light literature. This program was continued after World War II, and was supplemented with works on contemporary history, some of which were published as translations in Great Britain, the United States of America, and Spain as well.

By that time, however, the founding of two professional law journals (Rpfleger in 1948 and FamRZ in 1954) initiated the publishing house’s current focus on an exclusively legal publishing program. In addition to these first two journals, manuals, commentaries and textbooks have been published in numerous editions, as well as the first monograph series of doctoral and postdoctoral theses. Since then, two further professional law journals and several series have been added to the program.

The thematic focus of the publishing program is family law, the law of judicial officers, civil procedural law and voluntary jurisdiction, private international law and international procedural law as well as parts of criminal law, criminal procedural law, and public law.

Since the end of the 1980s the publishing house has also included electronic media in its program in the areas of its thematic focus. In 1991, it published, among others, its first CD-ROM followed by two electronic databases and an electronic collection of statutes.

The publishing house is a member of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft rechts- und staatswissenschaftlicher Verlage e.V. (ARSV), des Deutschen Familiengerichtstages e.V. and of the Wissenschaftlichen Vereinigung für Familienrecht e.V.
